Officially revised! EU POPs regulations tighten PFOS control limits

On June 27th, 2025, the European Commission published the amendment of POPs regulations (EU) 2025/718 in its official gazette. The amendment will take effect on July 17, 2025, and the revised new restrictions on PFOS will be implemented on December 3, 2025.

Main revision contents:

1. The terminology of " Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid and its derivatives (PFOS)" is revised to "Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), its salts and PFOS-related compounds".

2. The limit of introducing unintentional trace contaminant (UTC) into PFOS and its salts is 0.025mg/kg; Reduce the UTC limit of PFOS-related compounds in substances, mixtures and articles to 1mg/kg.

3. The specific exemption of PFOS and its derivatives as antifogging agent for non-decorative hard chromium (VI) coating was deleted.

4. Deleted the content related to the analysis standard.

PFOS and its salts are widely used for surface antifouling treatment of textiles, food contact materials and other products because of their excellent oil-water repellency. CTT reminds relevant enterprises exporting to Europe to confirm the PFOS content in their products, so as to avoid losses caused by exporting non-compliant products.
